The WRA boys varsity tennis team closed out its season in dramatic fashion on May 14, defeating North Royalton 3–2 on the road to finish with an impressive 9–4 overall record.
Collin Si '27 gave the Pioneers an early advantage at #1 singles with a dominant performance, controlling the match from start to finish in a flawless 6–0, 6–0 victory.
At #2 doubles, Shane Deng '26 and Jack Shen '27 battled against a strong North Royalton team. The pair mixed up their strategy well and competed throughout the match but ultimately fell 6–2, 6–0.
The #1 doubles match featured seniors Roberts Sartor '26 and Griffin Vaughn '26 against an experienced Bears duo. The match included several high-level rallies and entertaining points, but North Royalton came away with a 6–1, 6–2 victory.
Trailing 2–1 overall, WRA needed wins from both remaining singles courts to secure the team result. At #3 singles, Victor Wang '26 stepped up with a strong 6–1, 6–1 performance. Although the score appeared comfortable, the match featured several long and competitive rallies throughout.
That left the match resting on #2 singles, where Mekhi Hoyte '28 delivered one of the most exciting moments of the season. After splitting the first two sets, Hoyte found himself trailing 8–5 in the deciding 10-point tiebreaker. Showing tremendous composure and determination, he rallied back to win the tiebreak 11–9 and clinch the victory for the Pioneers.
Thursday's match marked the conclusion of a successful season for WRA, a team that continued to improve throughout the spring while playing some of its best tennis at the end of the year. The Pioneers now say goodbye to seven graduating seniors whose leadership and dedication helped uphold the program's tradition of competitive and respectful play.
The future remains bright as the next group prepares to carry that tradition forward into the 2027 season.
