The Western Reserve Academy Girls Varsity Basketball team traveled to Shaker Heights on Saturday to face the No. 1-ranked team in OHSAA Division IV, Laurel School (15–3), and delivered a gritty, back-and-forth performance before falling 77–71.
The Pioneers came out sharp in a fast-paced opening quarter, trading blows with the Gators and carrying a 20–17 lead into the second. Defense tightened in the second frame as both teams struggled to find rhythm offensively. Laurel held a narrow 24–23 advantage with under three minutes remaining in the half before a string of three-pointers and trips to the free-throw line allowed the Gators to stretch the lead to 36–27 at the break.
Reserve responded with tremendous energy to open the second half. Nina Bilic '28 and Maliyah Lofton '26 each knocked down key threes, Emerie Davis '27 converted in transition, and Eva Barron '27 attacked the rim to help the Pioneers reclaim a 43–42 lead with 4:09 left in the third quarter.
Laurel answered with a decisive 14–0 run, regaining control before a Mia Lindal '26 floater at the buzzer cut the deficit to 56–45 heading into the fourth.
Trailing 66–51 with just over five minutes remaining, the Pioneers refused to fold. Lofton's layup with 2:07 to play trimmed the margin to 69–64. Moments later, Davis came up with a steal and a three-point play to cut the lead to 73–68 with just over a minute left. Despite the late surge, Laurel was able to close out the game at the free-throw line for a 77–71 final.
Lofton led the way with 27 points and 4 assists. Davis added 14 points and 4 steals, while Bilic contributed 12 points. Barron filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals, and Norah Fuld '26 added 5 points and 3 blocks.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back Monday at home as they host last year's OHSAA Division II runner-up, Anthony Wayne (16–3).
