Western Reserve Academy kicked off Thanksgiving break in Cincinnati at the prestigious Journey to the Tourney, opening with a tough matchup against host Winton Woods High School, the defending Division II State Champions who finished last season a perfect 27–0.
The first quarter was tightly contested until Winton Woods closed on a decisive 12–2 run to take an 18–8 lead. The Warriors continued to push the pace in the second quarter, stretching their advantage to 43–23 at halftime. Early in the third, the deficit grew to 24, but the Pioneers refused to fold.
A spark came from the group of Maliyah Lofton '26, Mia Lindal '26, Tara Nachbar '28, Kobi Marsden '28, and Milou De Heus '28, who ignited a 19–7 run over a thrilling three-minute stretch to bring the game back within single digits early in the fourth quarter. WRA kept the pressure on and cut the lead to six with under three minutes remaining, but Winton Woods made key plays late to hold on for a 61–55 victory.
Maliyah Lofton '26 led the way with 19 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in a dynamic two-way performance. Tara Nachbar '28 delivered a standout effort with 14 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Mia Lindal '26 added 6 points and 3 rebounds, while Nina Bilic '28 contributed 6 points and 4 boards. Kobi Marsden '28 provided a strong defensive presence with 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, November 23, in a neutral-site matchup against a strong West Clermont High School team.
