Pioneers Battle Back but Fall Short in Rematch Against Example Academy

Less than 24 hours after their season opener, the WRA Girls Varsity Basketball team returned to the court for a rematch against Example Academy (IL) and delivered a gritty, improved performance despite falling 74–63.

The first quarter was tightly contested before Example Academy used a strong second-quarter surge to take a 45–27 halftime lead. Refusing to back down, the Pioneers came out of the locker room with renewed energy—turning up their defensive pressure and converting turnovers into fast-break points. In just over three minutes, WRA stormed back to cut the deficit to four at 47–43, but Example responded with timely baskets to maintain control.

Maliyah Lofton ('26) led all scorers with 22 points, showcasing her leadership and poise. Tara Nachbar ('28) added 11 points, while freshman Avery Childress ('29) continued her strong start with 9 points. Emerie Davis ('27) and Nina Bilic ('28) each chipped in 8 points, and Kobi Marsden ('28) added 5.

Despite the loss, the Pioneers' resilience and second-half surge underscored the team's growth and chemistry early in the season. WRA now turns its focus to the Journey to the Tourney in Cincinnati, where they will face Winton Woods High School—the reigning Division II state champions—on Saturday, November 22, followed by a matchup with West Clermont High School on Sunday.
