The National Prep Championships are widely regarded as one of, if not the toughest, postseason wrestling tournaments in the country. Each year, many of the nation's top-ranked programs compete for the opportunity to be crowned a Prep National Champion. Powerhouses such as #2 Lake Highland Prep, #3 Blair Academy, #6 Malvern Prep, and #9 Wyoming Seminary headline a field stacked with elite talent.
This year, three Western Reserve Academy Pioneers have earned the right to compete at the 2026 National Prep Championships.
Carmello Kolb '28,
Braydden Crum-Humburg '28, and
Blaise Bennett '26 all qualified with outstanding performances at the 2026 Pennsylvania Independent School Wrestling Tournament (PAISWT), held at the Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania.
The top six finishers in each weight class at PAISWT qualify for Nationals, and all three Pioneers finished well within that threshold.
At 132 pounds,
Braydden Crum-Humburg entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed. He advanced to the semifinals before dropping a tightly contested match to the eventual champion and No. 1 seed from Germantown Academy. Crum-Humburg responded with resilience, battling back through the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match. There, he controlled the bout against the No. 4 seed from The Hill School and earned a 6–3 victory to secure third place. This marks Braydden's second consecutive trip to the National Prep Championships after qualifying as a freshman last year. He enters this year's tournament as the No. 15 seed with his sights set on the podium.
Carmello Kolb competed at 120 pounds and brought a 16–2 season record into PAISWT, earning the No. 7 seed. After falling to the No. 2 seed from national powerhouse Malvern Prep in the quarterfinals, Kolb battled back with three straight wins in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match. The match set up a rematch with the same Malvern Prep opponent. Carmello fought until the final whistle and ultimately placed fourth overall. He heads into Nationals as the No. 8 seed in his first appearance at the National Prep Championships and is determined to contend for a medal.
At 175 pounds, senior
Blaise Bennett qualified with an inspiring performance. Entering PAISWT unseeded, Bennett dropped his opening-round match to the No. 1 seed from Malvern Prep. He responded with determination, winning four consecutive matches to advance to the third-place bout. After a hard-fought final match, Blaise secured a fourth-place finish. Having joined WRA for his senior year, Bennett has embodied perseverance and work ethic while overcoming challenges throughout the season to earn his place among the nation's best.
Kolb, Crum-Humburg, and Bennett now turn their attention to the National Prep Championships, where they will compete against the country's elite with the goal of bringing All-American honors back to Western Reserve Academy.
