The Western Reserve Academy Girls Varsity Tennis Team hosted #9-ranked Laurel on Wednesday and came away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory. The win keeps the Pioneers perfect on the season, improving to 7-0, and sets up a key NEO League matchup Thursday at Shaker Heights.
In a showcase of elite singles play, Reserve's Denisse Jimenez Robles '26 battled Laurel's freshman standout Sophia Nguyen-Huynh at #1 singles, while Rithi Hegde '29 faced Gators junior Rida Tahir at #2. Both Pioneers competed with determination but fell short—Nguyen-Huynh winning 6-2, 6-1, and Tahir earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Reserve answered back with three straight wins to seal the match. At #1 doubles, the undefeated duo of Lela Yajnik '27 and Sasha Hillard '29 dominated Laurel's Danah Alrashid and Bailey Everett 6-0, 6-0. The #2 doubles pairing of Riya Patel '26 and Carina Tang '28 followed with a sharp 6-0, 6-1 performance over Chloe Samuels and Blake Zoller.
The clinching point came from Sia Mahesh '27, who controlled her match at #3 singles with a confident 6-1, 6-2 win over Lulu Hoffer.
The Pioneers hit the road on Thursday, September 11, for an away contest at Shaker Heights. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
