The WRA Girls Varsity Tennis team took to the road for the second time in the week and came away with a 5-0 win at Wooster on Wednesday, August 26. With the win, the Pioneers move to 2-0 on the season, claiming their 38th win in their last 41 matches dating back to 2023.

At #1 Singles, WRA's Rithi Hegde '29 set the tone for the evening with an outstanding match, defeating Wooster Senior Hailey Jung 6-0, 6-0. Playing an inspired game, Hegde was strong throughout the match and never looked back. WRA's Catie Cunningham '29 soon followed with a solid 6-1, 6-0 win over the Generals' Senior Alyssa Rae McIntosh at #2 Singles. Cunningham played an impressive all-court game and found her range midway through the first set and finished strong. For the second time in the season, the clinching point came from the Pios #1 Doubles team of Lela Yajnik '27 and Sasha Hillard '29, who turned in a solid performance in defeating Wooster's Nadia Cascarelli and Chloe Liu 6-1, 6-0. Yajnik and Hillard played a nice up-tempo match. Shortly thereafter, the Pioneer's #2 Doubles team of Sia Mahesh '27 and Bella Arakaki '28 closed out a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wooster's Olivia Henry and Lilian Ober to lock up the 4th team point. Mahesh and Arakaki played a focused match and came through on some key points and games. That left WRA's #3 Singles Dorothy Mendelson '30 to try to complete the sweep. Mendelson was locked in a tough, nearly 2-hour battle against the Generals' Elizabeth Frantz. Mendelson raised her game throughout the match and posted a gutsy 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (2) win to deliver the 5th point for WRA.

The Pioneer Varsity will resume play on Thursday, August 27 when they host Copley at the WRA tennis complex at 430pm. Both Varsity and JV will be in action at home.
