Western Reserve Academy kicked off its wrestling season on December 5 at the Hickory Invitational Tournament, where the team delivered a series of promising results against tough competition. With several newcomers and first-time competitors in the lineup, the Pioneers showed resilience, steady improvement, and flashes of high-level potential.
The highlight of the day came from Braydden Crum-Humburg '28, who battled through the 133-pound bracket to earn an impressive 2nd-place finish. Crum-Humburg wrestled with composure and grit throughout the tournament, setting an early tone for the season.
At 145 pounds, Hwan Jung '26 also secured a podium spot, placing 8th overall in a deep and competitive weight class. Jung's effort throughout the day demonstrated his ability to scrap and stay in matches against experienced opponents.
Blaise Bennett '26 collected three wins and just missed a top-eight finish, dropping two close matches along the way. His performance showed significant offseason growth and positions him well for future tournaments.
Competing in his first-ever tournament, Wenbin Tang '28 went 1–2, highlighted by a dominant 18–0 technical fall victory. His aggressive style and quick scoring ability were standout moments.
Overall, it was an encouraging start to the season, with valuable mat experience gained across the lineup.
The Pioneers will be back in action on December 12–13 at the Edgewood Invitational Tournament.
