Pottstown, PA – Western Reserve boys varsity basketball team concluded 2024 with a strong showing at the prestigious Mercer Invitational, earning a 3rd-place finish. Across three games in three days, the Pioneers showcased resilience, depth, and balanced scoring to head into the holiday break on a high note.
Game 1: WRA 83, Millbrook School (NY) 76
The Pioneers opened the tournament with a commanding 83-76 victory over Millbrook on Thursday, December 19th. WRA controlled the game from start to finish, holding off multiple Millbrook runs. Dominating the boards with a 46-30 rebounding advantage, WRA overcame a tough shooting night (7-31 from three) by leaning on their hallmark of balanced scoring. Anthony Thompson '26 (19 points) and Trey Cady '25 (19 points) led five players in double figures.
Game 2: Westtown (PA) 94, WRA 89 (2OT)
Friday's semifinal was a thriller, as WRA fell just short in a double-overtime battle against Westtown, 94-89. Xavier University commit, Jayden Forsythe, led all scorers with 30 points, but the Pioneers matched Westtown's intensity every step of the way. CJ Stinson '25 delivered a standout performance with 25 points and 10 assists, while Anthony Thompson '26 also notched a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Torr Sorensen '25 contributed 14 points and 9 boards, and Donovan Carney '26 added 15 points, including five three-pointers. WRA was flawless at the free-throw line (10-10), but Westtown's late-game execution and 19-24 shooting from the stripe proved decisive.
Game 3: WRA 98, St. Andrews (RI) 93
In Saturday's consolation game, WRA closed the weekend with a 98-93 victory over St. Andrews. Anthony Thompson '26 capped off an outstanding tournament with 30 points, leading a collective offensive effort that included 13 made three-pointers. The Pioneers' depth and versatility shone as they battled through fatigue in their third game in as many days.
With a well-earned holiday break ahead, the Pioneers will look to carry their momentum into the new year. Their next game is on Wednesday, January 8th, against Spire Academy at 6:30 PM.
