Pioneers Finish Season Strong at Northwest Pennsylvania Championships

The WRA Girls Cross Country team wrapped up their 2025 season on Friday, October 17, competing in the Northwest Pennsylvania Cross Country Championships in Girard, PA. Thirteen women's teams gathered on a crisp autumn afternoon to take on the scenic yet demanding course — a former state regional venue now serving as one of the area's premier end-of-season tests.

With the race held on an unfamiliar course, the Pioneers weren't sure what to expect, but they quickly discovered a challenging blend of wooded trails and rolling hills instead of the flat terrain they'd hoped for. Undeterred, WRA battled hard to finish eighth overall, tying with Erie Cathedral Prep and earning the spot on a tie-breaker.

Leading the way once again was sophomore Kobi Marsden '28, who hit the first mile in a quick 6:28 before a mid-race cramp slowed her down. Still, she showed tremendous grit, placing 18th out of 120 runners in 22:39. Close behind, junior Ellie Flores '27 delivered another strong, steady performance, finishing 20th in 22:42. Despite balancing field hockey duties earlier in the fall, Flores capped her debut cross country season with an impressive showing.

Co-captains Caroline West '27 and Leah Petras '27 finished 55th and 58th, respectively, crossing the line just seconds apart. West surged ahead in the final 300 meters to secure her top team finish of the season — a fitting display of the captains' steady leadership and shared determination throughout the year. Junior Colleen McAlonie '27 rounded out the scoring five, finishing 74th in 26:05, marking a strong conclusion to a season of rapid development for the first-year runner.

Also representing WRA were freshman Sabrina Maksimova '29 and senior Miranda McLaren '26, both of whom embodied the team's spirit and perseverance. Maksimova completed her second race — and first invitational — in strong form, while McLaren made her racing debut with enthusiasm and grit.

With six returners expected back next fall, the Pioneers have built a foundation of experience, chemistry, and confidence. After entering last season with only two returners, this year's squad showed tremendous growth and depth. Coach Warner praised the group's development and resilience, noting that "2025 just scratched the surface of what this team can achieve — 2026 can't get here soon enough."
