Coach Matt Shields brings a wealth of lacrosse experience and coaching prowess to Western Reserve Academy, where he serves as the Varsity Girls Lacrosse coach. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, Coach Shields grew up immersed in the sport, with his entire family involved at Bayswater Lacrosse Club. In 2009, he relocated to Seattle, WA, completing his high school education at Mercer Island High School before continuing his lacrosse career at the University of Mount Olive (NCAA DII).
At Mount Olive, Coach Shields distinguished himself on the field, participating in three Conference Carolinas Championships and the NCAA DII National Tournament in 2016. His passion for coaching ignited during high school, where he mentored youth teams and led summer camps throughout Mercer Island and Seattle. This commitment continued into college, where he coached club teams and honed his skills.
In 2016, Coach Shields launched his collegiate coaching career at Walsh University (NCAA DII), serving as Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach and Offensive Coordinator. He also volunteered with the Women's Lacrosse program, focusing on offensive strategies and goalkeeper development. In 2018, Coach Shields assumed the role of Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Walsh University, guiding the team to new heights with his strategic acumen and dedication.
Beyond coaching, Coach Shields resides on campus with his wife, Erin Reynolds, who teaches in Hudson Public Schools, and their beloved pocket pitbull, Mia. They share a passion for staying active, whether through workouts, hiking adventures with Mia or exploring new destinations together.
