Herb Haller '85

Coach Herb Haller ‘85 embodies excellence both as an alumnus of WRA and as the Boys Varsity Soccer coach for over 25 years. With an extraordinary coaching career, Coach Haller’s impact is etched into the fabric of WRA, where his leadership and commitment to his players have elevated the soccer program to national recognition.

As of September 2024, Coach Haller boasts an impressive overall coaching record of 425-157-85, with 341 victories as head coach. His achievements include multiple coaching accolades, such as the 2006 United Soccer Coaches Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year and finalist for National Coach of the Year, as well as induction into the Ohio-North Youth Soccer Association Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2012 and 2019, Coach Haller was named the Greater Akron Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (GASSCA) Private School Coach of the Year.

Coach Haller’s remarkable playing career laid the foundation for his success. A two-time high school All-American at WRA (1983-1984), he was a member of the US National Youth Team and a four-year starter at Indiana University, where he captained the Hoosiers to a national championship in 1988. 

Before his return to WRA, Mr. Haller coached at North Olmsted High School, leading the team to a state semi-final, and at the University of Akron, where his efforts helped secure three Mid-American Conference championships. Since 2000, as WRA’s head coach, Mr. Haller has continued to elevate the program, inspiring his players to uphold the highest standards of character and achievement.

On campus, Coach Haller’s influence extends beyond the soccer field. Over the years, he has served in numerous roles, including Faculty Master for German (22 years), Director of Athletics (12 years), Admission Officer, and Advisor. Married to Margaret Cushwa Haller ’86, Coach Haller is a proud father to Brigitta and Kurt ’15, and a devoted member of the WRA community.

Coach Haller’s coaching philosophy is anchored in three core values: Excellence, Integrity and Compassion. He inspires his players to strive for greatness on and off the field, fostering an environment where self-motivation and team support go hand in hand. With a commitment to respect and empathy, Coach Haller ensures his athletes grow not only as players, but as individuals who value sportsmanship and community.
