Coach Matt Garvey brings experience and enthusiasm to his role as Head Coach of the Boys Basketball team at WRA. Originally from Woburn, MA, Coach Garvey has built a distinguished career in basketball coaching and management.
His coaching journey began as a student manager at Providence College, where he spent four years supporting the program. He went on to coach at Providence for five seasons, serving as video coordinator and special assistant to the head coach. During his tenure, he contributed to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, helped secure Providence College’s only Big East Tournament Championship, and coached future NBA first-round draft picks Kris Dunn and David Duke.
At WRA, Coach Garvey served as Assistant Coach from 2021 to 2023 before being promoted to Head Coach in 2023. Under his leadership, the WRA Boys Basketball team won the National Prep Championship in 2024.
In addition to his coaching role, Coach Garvey is the Director of External Programs and serves as a Dorm Parent in Cartwright. He lives on campus with his wife, Kristen, and their dog, Dennis.
Coach Garvey holds an undergraduate degree in Economics and a Master’s in Higher Education, both from Providence College. He enjoys cooking, golfing and spending quality time with his family.
His coaching philosophy centers on connecting with student-athletes and helping them realize their full potential. He emphasizes the importance of a consistent work ethic and the values of accountability, honesty, trust and selflessness. These principles are integral to the program and are cultivated in every aspect of student-athlete life, from the classroom to the gym.
