GENEVA, OH—It was a first for everyone: Spire's inaugural showcase, WRA's season opener, and a rare race run completely in the dark. Under the glow of industrial floodlights and festive Christmas lights, over 2,000 runners from hundreds of teams created a massive sea of team camps at the start. While the dirt-packed start had the feel of a construction site - once you cleared the opening 400 meters - the course gave way to rolling hills, fast turns, and electric racing on the back course.
And on Saturday evening, the WRA boys capitalized on that high-octane atmosphere, leveraging months of disciplined summer mileage to secure a wave of personal records on one of the biggest early stages of the season.
Leading the charge in the Gold Division was team stalwart and captain James Johnston '27 who captured 9th place overall with a blistering personal-record time of 16:37.87, setting a relentless pace with a 4:58.09 opening mile. Close behind, Brendan Bennett '28 crossed in a hard-fought 17:53.84, with senior captain Ian Fleming '27 right on his heels, shattering his previous best with a 17:56.56 PR. Senior captain Daniel Randazzo '27 kept the momentum going - running a 5:46.97 in the first mile - and stopping the clock at 19:06.78, another personal best.
In the Junior Varsity race, the freshmen stole the show with three personal bests. Dominic Ilodi '30, in what he described as his first "real" 5k race, ran a blistering 19:07.2; it was the fastest opening race time for a freshman at WRA in at least 7 years. Not to be outdone, freshman Tripp Ballamy '30 finished with a sharp 19:25.46, and Tyson Edmunds '30 - fresh off a 200+ mile summer - ran a workman-like 20:17.63, despite dealing with pre-race cramping. It's not enough to say the future is bright with these three runners: with performances like these, each will have an impact on the varsity squad this year.
And, as the coaches often remind the team, sometimes the time you run has nothing to do with the success of your day. After battling injuries all summer, Ronan Flowers '28 put together a resilient 22:16.36, gutting it out all the way through to the end. Crossing that finish line demonstrated his mental toughness. Meanwhile, Arav Mathur '28 - despite tweaking a muscle just before the gun - embodied the team's spirit, anchoring himself at the start line to cheer on his teammates and celebrate their victories.
The team showed up to this one ready to lay it all out there—and have a little fun, too. With Sheetz in their bellies as they pulled into campus just before midnight, it was a memorable opening night to the season. We don't know who this team will become in 2026, but we do know they're off to a good start, together.
