The Pioneer Fencing Team hosted its second home tournament of the season this weekend, dedicated to Charles Mears, who taught at WRA from 1935–1947, coached fencing, served in the U.S. Navy, and founded both the Alumni Association and the "For the Boys" WWII plaque.
The event featured a full day of competition in epee, foil, and saber, drawing fencers from across Ohio, Pittsburgh, and beyond.
In D and Under Epee, Eric Lee ('26) went undefeated in pool play to take the top seed, and Chase Fortuna ('27) earned a quarterfinal finish, placing fifth overall.
In D and Under Foil, Bryton Miller ('26) led the way for Reserve, winning bronze and renewing his national rating after a strong run through college and club opponents. Teammates Luke Pizor ('27), Peter Zhu ('29), and Betty Yao ('27) each earned multiple pool victories and valuable experience.
In Saber, Lily Zhu ('27) captured gold, dominating from start to finish. Laura Meng ('28) earned bronze, and Bryton Miller ('26), fencing in both foil and saber, advanced to the semifinals.
The tournament concluded with the team epee relay, featuring WRA's "Hawks," "Squirrels," and "Chipmunks" alongside Bowling Green State University. The Hawks — Eric Lee, Maxime Regnier, and Chase Fortuna — went undefeated and claimed the team title, defeating BGSU 45–28 in the final.
Please join us in congratulating all our fencers for their dedication, sportsmanship, and outstanding performances throughout the Charles Mears Memorial.
