On Tuesday, the WRA Girls Varsity Tennis team hosted the 7th ranked team in the state, the Rocky River Magnificat Blue Streaks. This was a battle of two strong teams at the statewide level, with WRA prevailing 4-1 in a match that lasted over 2 hours. The win keeps the Pioneers in first place in the NE Ohio Division A High School League and moves their record to 9-0.

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the solid play of #2 Singles player Mikaela Chriita '26 and the #1 Doubles team of Lela Yajnik '27 and Sia Mahesh '27. Chirita posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Magnificat's Corinne Daniels, while Yajnik and Mahesh finished strong and were victorious 6-2, 6-0 over the Mag's Marissa Packer and Kaya Keating.

The score remained 2-0 for over an hour before Magnificat's #1 Singles player Anna Mancino posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over WRA's Riya Hegde '25 in a high quality match. At about the 2 hour mark, the match was clinched when the Pioneer's #2 Doubles team of Sehar Mahesh '25 and Riya Patel '26 notched a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the Blue Streak's Jamie Clevenger and Maggie Steen, riding strong play in the last set and a half. The final team point for the Pioneers came from #3 Singles player Denisse Jimenez-Robles '26 who scored a gritty come-from-behind victory over Margaret Williams of Magnificat, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.

The Girls Varsity Tennis team's next match is on Saturday, September 14, when they host a doubleheader, playing Cathedral Prep of Erie, PA, at 9am and Toledo Notre Dame Academy at approximately noon. WRA's seniors will be honored during the afternoon match.
